This past weekend four different colleges in Michigan and Ohio competed in the fifth annual National Ice Carving Association (NICA) Collegiate Invitational in Downtown Holland. The finished pieces were judged by the team coaches, all of whom are certified in the NICA standards of judging. At a private awards dinner following the invitational, NICA awarded prizes to the winning carvers.
The carver with the top individual score was Connor Walling from the Oakland Community College. His sculpture was of a detailed grasshopper. The second place winner was Katlin Pfropper, from Macomb Community College, for her sculpture of a tall giraffe. Shannon Gerasimchik, from Ohio Business College, took third place for his unique sculpture of a grill.
A big thank you goes to Crown Motors of Holland for sponsoring the 2014 Ice Sculpting Competition.
